Ever heard of a barn standing on one leg? Well, prepare yourself, because Silva Holdings, the crafty craft beer maker behind 2 Silos Brewing Co., is seriously considering going down to one silo. Why? Let's just say the taste of the meals tax in Prince William County has them feeling a bit, shall we say, "hopped up."
Marcus Silva, principal of Silva Holdings and chief visionary behind the 2 Silos project, announced the startling news in an exclusive interview earlier today.
"It's all about survival, really," explained a visibly stressed Silva, staring out of the window towards what might soon be the One Silo Brewing Co. "We went from restoring historic barns to possibly offloading historic silos. The meals tax here is like a bad yeast strain — it's just ruining the brew."
Last year, the Prince William County Board of Supervisors took it upon themselves to introduce a 4% meals tax. The idea, presumably, was to provide more dough for schools. However, local restaurateurs are now feeling the pinch, and it's not from the stone oven pizza clamps.
To cope with the sour taste left by the tax, Silva and his team are considering drastic measures — including auctioning off one of their titular silos.
"I suppose you could call it creative destruction," Silva quipped, in a desperate attempt to find humor in the situation. "But I'm not sure the joke's going to land for our accountant."
Despite the circumstances, Silva continues to remain optimistic and assured that the experience would remain unchanged.
"We will still have a silo, a beer garden, and the same amount of bocce courts. But I guess we’ll have to rebrand all our merchandise to '1 Silo' and find a new logo. Maybe a barn with a crutch?”
While it’s unclear if the move would significantly help the bottom line, it's already sparking a conversation around the unappetizing meals tax.
Local patrons of 2 Silos have expressed shock and bemusement. Longtime customer, Fred Barleywine, observed, "I just hope the beer doesn't lose half its flavor."
However, amidst the hoppy havoc, one question remains: Will Silva Holdings rename the company '1 Silo Brewing Co.' or just slap a bandaid over the '2' on the sign? Only time, and perhaps the repeal of the meals tax, will tell.
